These similar African flags use the same pan-African vertical palette. Senegal puts a green star on the yellow band. Mali does not. Guinea keeps the same colors in reverse order.
Green-yellow-red vertical tricolors cluster in West Africa. Mali is green, yellow, red with green at the hoist and no charge. Senegal is the same order plus a green star in the yellow. If you see a star, it is Senegal. If you do not, you still have to keep Guinea in mind: Guinea is red, yellow, green with red at the hoist.
This is the Ireland / Côte d'Ivoire problem in different colors: same three bands, different hoist or a single charge. Slogans like “Africa tricolor” do not survive Flag Drill. One detail does: star or no star, then hoist color.
